Video Hacking

I've been teaching a lot of folks how to get your videos from youtube and youtube-like sites and make them your own to do what evil to them you wish. This is how (you'll need a mac, I haven't tried this on windows). This is my open-source method that I can teach basic design folks with minimal computer skills.
First download democracy. The thing about democracy is it lets you search all those video sites and download the FLV files directly to your hard drive. By default it stores those files in your "Movies" folder. Without Flash, those files aren't useful, so next download iSquint. Isquint will turn those FLVs into mp4 that you can put on your ipod or import into iMovie or Final Cut Express/Pro (when selecting your coversion process, choose "Optimize for TV" and select H.264 as your compressor. Then you are free to manipulate the video anyway you wish. Of course you'll need to scale the video up a bit for standard resolution, but if you're grabbing video from youtube, quality was never your main concern.
It presents us with the quintessential suburban living space in which to find God. I didn't think the religious right liked to use Macs, oh wait, it's running Windows. I find the decorations interesting, but I find the complete lack of the sublime to be most interesting.

I'm in New York this week to soak up some art work. Here's some things I noticed at the Pulse Art Fair before my camera's batteries died.

The above video shows what I think are tadpoles swimming in a miniature tank. That tank is used like film from which a projection appears on a near by wall.

This dentist's chair is made entirely of cardboard.

...interesting little sculptures. Grandma would like them.

I liked this one a lot.

This was fun. It's Rambo recontextualized as a silent Kino-type film; complete with campy piano, undercranked motion, etc. Fun, not quite sublime.
