Assignment: Faux Ceramics

Level: Beginner

In this assignment you will sculpt ceramic vessels such as cups, mugs, vases, and bowls, build and apply materials (shaders) to these objects, light them with conventional 3-point studio lighting setup, and photograph them (render them) in high resolution for print production as well as video production.

Project specifics:

  • Sculpt 3 – 10 vessels
  • Build a studio set that has a cyclorama with a three-light setup and place your vessels on this set
  • ‘photograph’ your vessels from three different angles on your set and experiment with your virtual camera – for each photograph experiment with the camera’s focal length and depth of field setting. Similarly, try experimenting with the lighting of your set for each photo – change the colors, move them around, adjust the brightness and size of the lights. Render these photos at 1920×1080 and save them as PNG files. You can use Cycles or Eevee for these renders.
  • choose your favorite photo and re-render it at 4k to be printed – export a 16bit TIF file
  • Animated a dolly sweep of your scene and export a 5 – 10 second 1080p 24fps h264 MP4 video file

Write a short paragraph explaining your creative and technical process.
